Multimedia production for the

Friulian Museum of Natural History

Mobile 3D creates three interactive multimedia stations and six in-depth thematic videos for the future permanent exhibit of the Friulian Museum of Natural History.

Pending the completion of the renovation of the buildings that originated as the Udine City Slaughterhouse in 1924, the stations and videos can be accessed by requesting a guided tour at email: info.mfsn@comune.udine.it.

The interactive stations are designed for "touch-free" enjoyment, in fact they employ "leap motion" technology to recognize commands given through the natural use of hand movement. The content created guides the visitor on a journey through the naturalistic wonders of our territory, from the life in the forest of insects and small animals, to the areas in the region where the waters of the rivers sink to resurface in resurgence areas. Splendid videos reveal the microcosm that lives in the undergrowth. 3D animations intervene where the camera eye cannot reach, creating a comprehensive and effective visual experience for the disclosure of complex phenomena.

Two in-depth videos open a window into the hypogeal world of bats and proteus. The latter's animated virtual reconstruction is an example of our passion for 3D graphics and its use in museums.

Three videos deal with analyzing the effects of human activity on our land, addressing such issues as anthropogenic impact on the sea, forest, and the important implications of agriculture.

Finally, a short video lingers on the beauty of geophytes, the first flowers that color our forests in spring.

Making of

In this project, Mobile 3D demonstrated its expertise in museum interactive experience design (UI/UX Design), software development, multimedia production, and experimentation with hybrid 2D and 3D animation techniques. Video content combines real footage and photorealistic renderings of natural environments, animals and insects. Here we report on some of our achievements, from the magnificent 3D model of the proteus, to the impressive struggles of flying deer.

The 3D reconstruction of the Cerambice illustrated its incredible life cycle, its physiognomy, and highlighted its remarkable size and characteristics.

Content Management System

Last but not least, the technological provision of the Mobile 3D will allow the Friulian Museum of Natural History a continuous updating of the contents thanks to the consolidated Cloud DMS (Digital Museum System) solution. In fact, through web portal it is possible to easily and immediately modify the contents of the stations, an indispensable feature to avoid the obsolescence of the multimedia equipment of a modern museum. The CMS (Content Management System) is the web tool made available to museum curators to enrich and update the stations independently and securely.

The important multimedia production created is made available in four languages: Italian, English, German and Friulian.
